Robert Ernest Young

Robert Ernest “Bert” Young, age 77 of Somerset, Kentucky, passed from this life on Monday, July 7, 2025, at St Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Bert was born on November 22, 1947, in Somerset, Kentucky, son of the late Ernest Carl and Mary Katheryn Haynes Young. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the United States Air Force, a member of Denham Street Baptist Church, a graduate of the Ferguson High School Class of 1965, and retired from the Department of Housing, Building and Construction after a long career. He supported the D.A.V. and Paralyzed Veterans. He was an avid foodie, enjoyed playing the guitar, watching UK basketball and football. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jimmie Carl Young, brother-in-law, Roy Lee Phelps and a nephew, Jeff Phelps. He is survived by his wife Arlene Jasper Young, whom he married on June 15, 1975 at Denham Street Baptist Church; daughter, Robyn Young Bradley (Scot) of Nancy; sisters, Janet Cristine Spangler (Donald) of Lexington, Lois Anne Phelps of Somerset and Virginia Gayle “Peach” Whitaker (Darrell) of Somerset; grandson, Dakota Scot Bradley (fiancé Brooklyn Haynes) of Lexington; lifelong friends, Nicky and Rosie Hamm. He is also survived by a host of other family members and friends.

Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Southern Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Junior Simpson, William Davidson, Greg Hamm, Jim Simpson, Gary Ball and Joey Bray. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Old Ferguson Gym, 570 KY 3057, Ferguson, KY 42533.
