Susan Vanhook McAlpin, 72, of Somerset—better known as “Susie” or “Grammy” to all who knew her—passed away at Jean Waddle Care Center on Monday, January 5, with family by her side. True to the way she lived, her passing was quiet and peaceful—felt deeply by those who loved her.
Susie never needed to raise her voice to be heard. Her strength lay in steadiness—in showing up, listening carefully, and doing what needed to be done because she loved others deeply. This strength often manifested itself in small acts of care, unwavering loyalty, and a quiet determination that shaped the lives of those around her. She will also be remembered fondly for her mischievous smile and gentle sense of humor that could lighten even the hardest moments.
Susie was a 1971 graduate of Somerset High School, where she shone as a proud Jumperette. She later worked for many years as an intake coordinator for Lincare.
Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Don McAlpin; her father, Herschel Vanhook; her mother, Lucille Vanhook; and her brother-in-law, Michael Ledford. Her memories of these family members remained an important part of her life.
Susie is lovingly remembered by those she leaves behind, including her children, Dr. Josh McAlpin, Zack McAlpin, and Mandy (Brian) Young; her sisters, Patricia Cox and Jenny Ledford; and her brother, Rippy (Diann) Vanhook. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bella McAlpin, Leighton McAlpin, Haley McAlpin, Christian Young, Lyla Young, and Gabriel Young. In addition to her immediate family, Aunt Susie will forever be remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Susie was also lucky and grateful to have had a strong circle of lifelong friends.
Susie walked through life with a quiet faith that shaped her actions and guided her heart. She recently found deep joy and friendship in her Sunday School class, Circle of Friends—affectionately known as “Lula’s”—at First Baptist Church. In her passing, her family finds comfort in the assurance that she has been welcomed home, where love is complete and peace everlasting.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Both the visitation and funeral will be held at First Baptist Church of Somerset, with David Pendley officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
